CDD Trains Journalists on Fact-Checking, Media Ethics in Katsina

The Center for Democracy and Development (CDD) Africa organized a two-day workshop for journalists at the Katsina Guest-Inn Hall, aimed at enhancing media professionalism and promoting ethical reporting.

The event focused on strengthening the role of journalists in preventing information manipulation and ensuring accurate public communication. Key topics covered included:

Role of Media in Preventing Manipulation
Journalists discussed strategies for promoting responsible reporting and building public trust in media content.

Fact-Checking and Verification
The workshop highlighted the definition, purpose, and importance of fact-checking, explaining the difference between verification and fact-checking. Participants learned about potential consequences of publishing unverified information and received an overview of fact-checking organizations and initiatives.

Verification Methods and Techniques
Sessions emphasized evaluating source credibility, cross-checking information, verifying images, videos, and documents, and using digital tools and open-source intelligence (OSINT). Journalists were trained to identify red flags, including emotional language, urgency, and lack of attribution.

Ethical Reporting Standards
Journalists were reminded of core principles such as accuracy, fairness, balance, transparency, and accountability. The importance of avoiding conflicts of interest, respecting privacy, and minimizing harm was stressed.

Combatting Information Manipulation
Participants were encouraged to verify information before publishing, promote media literacy among audiences, use factual headlines, provide context for complex issues, and collaborate with credible institutions to ensure reliability.

The workshop concluded with discussions on best practices for responsible journalism, equipping participants with practical tools to enhance the quality and credibility of reporting in Nigeria.
